Our Next Concert

Saturday 3rd February 2018 at 7:30pm
The APEX, Bury St. Edmunds
Conductor - Andrew Morley
Guest Leader - Nick Reynolds
Wagner: Flying Dutchman Overture
Tchaikovsky: Waltz from Eugene Onegin
Ravel: Tombeau de Couperin
Khachaturian: Adagio from Spartacus
Debussy: La Mer

Our first concert of 2018 has a nautical theme. Wagner’s opera The Flying Dutchman is all about a sea captain under a curse to sail the seven seas forever and whose only means of redemption was to find the love of a faithful woman. Although the story behind Khachaturian’s Ballet Spartacus is that of a slave uprising against the Roman Empire, the Adagio will always be remembered by British audiences as the theme music to the 1970s TV series, the Onedin Line, set in mid-19th century Liverpool about a shipping company owned by the Onedin family. Debussy’s orchestral masterpiece La Mer – subtitled three symphonic sketches for orchestra - is probably his most well-known and frequently performed orchestral work, and one which will surely make many appearances this year with 2018 being the 100th anniversary of Debussy’s death. Ravel – the other famous french impressionist composer of the late 19th and early 20th century – dedicated his Tombeau de Couperin to a series of close friends who lost their lives during the First World War – another anniversary being marked this year. Lastly the orchestra will perform the Waltz from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin – no nautical connection here but a fine piece of orchestral music!
