We had great pleasure in welcoming Martin Pring to conduct the orchestra for this concert. As well as eliciting a first rate performance from the orchestra, his straightforward manner and witty asides at rehearsals were appreciated by all. | ||||||||||||||||||||

Pity about the small audienceEnglish Music Wolsey Orchestra, Ipswich Corn Exchange, February 9An interesting programme consisting of six 20th century English pieces - some well known but others not - is something of a gamble, and a painfully small audience at the Corn Exchange indicated a failure to capture the imagination of the casual concert-goer.More the pity because there was plenty of good music, musicianship and conducting on display. Elgar's Cockaigne overture was given a fine performance. Conductor Martin Pring was successful in building the different episodes into a convincing unity. Walton's opera Troilus and Cressida received a successful premiere in 1954. The three songs clearly showed the quality of Walton's inspiration and were splendidly sung with great authority by Ros Evans. Holst's St. Pauls Suite was played with great energy and verve and the inclusion of the Greensleeves theme in the rapid finale was well-judged . The orchestra played well, particularly in the exciting finale. |
